  • Everest College shut down in Ontario, 14 schools closed

An Ontario regulator has shut down U.S.-based Everest College, a chain of 14 private career schools.

On Thursday, the superintendent of private career colleges, the independent regulator that governs schools like Everest and others in the province, said it has suspended the chain's licence to operate in Ontario as a private college, effective immediately.

Everest College closure no surprise to some who call it a scam

The news of Everest College's closure in Ontario came as no surprise to some former students and an ex-teacher. Instead, they say what is shocking is that the private career college they claim was corrupt wasn't shut down a lot sooner.

They allege Everest used aggressive marketing to lure students and then skewed records to keep incompetent pupils in class so it could continue to collect their student loans.

Everest College grads want loan forgiveness for 'worthless' diploma

Former students of defunct Everest College say their diplomas are "worthless" and the Ontario government should forgive their thousands of dollars in student loans.

Some recent Ontario grads of the now closed private career college are joining a growing movement in the United States. They're asking for loan forgiveness for their studies with Corinthian Colleges, the American company that owned Everest and other private colleges in the U.S.

"It's a dirty diploma," declares Karen Zahoruk, who graduated from Everest's Hamilton campus just weeks before the college's collapse in the province.

Former Everest College students want diplomas after completing programs

Melissa O'Connell is fighting to get a diploma she feels she deserves after Everest College suddenly shut down.

The former student says she finished her one-year medical office administration program a week before the Ontario government shut down 14 Everest College campuses across the province in February, leaving thousands of students adrift.
