    What if Israel Bombed Iran?

    Anne Applebaum wrote:

Let's be serious for a moment. President Barack Obama will not bomb Iran. This is not because he is a liberal, or because he is a peacenik, or because he doesn't have the guts to try and "save" his presidency in this time-honored manner, as Sarah Palin said she would like him to do.
The president will not bomb Iran's nuclear installations for precisely the same reasons that George W. Bush did not bomb Iran's nuclear installations: because we don't know exactly where they all are, because we don't know whether such a raid could stop the Iranian nuclear program for more than a few months, and because Iran's threatened response—against Israelis and U.S. troops, via Iran's allies in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, and Lebanon—isn't one we want to cope with at this precise moment. Nor do we want the higher oil prices that would instantly follow. No U.S. president doing a sober calculation would want to start a new war of choice while U.S. troops are still actively engaged on two other fronts, and no U.S. president could expect public support for more than a nanosecond.

The United States won't bomb Iran, but another country might.

Some day, when the president picks up the phone and is told that the Israeli prime minister is on the line: Israel has just carried out a raid on Iranian nuclear sites. What then?

Does Israel intend to strike Iran? The answer is for sure.

Israel regards any expansion of nuclear weapons capability within its region as an intolerable threat to its survival. For this reason, Iran’s nuclear program has triggered serious concern in Israel , and aroused the world's speculation that the Israeli government may choose to attack Iran’s nuclear installations as a most effective measure to delay Iran's acquisition of nuclear weapons capability.

Don't forget that on 7 June 1981, a flight of Israeli Air Force F-16A fighter aircraft, with an escort of F-15As, bombed and destroyed the Iraqi nuclear reactor being constructed at the Al Tuwaitha Nuclear Research Center.

I agree with Edward that the attack is in the plan. Nobody will doubt that Israel's new spy plane is not the latest weapon against Iran.

Israel Aerospace Industries has announced that its "Eitan" or "Heron" long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle is now part of the Israeli air force.

Much has been made about the UAV's ability to "reach" Iran.

With 24- to 36-hour endurance and the ability to operate above 40,000 feet, the Eitan
will definitely be able to tackle overwatching Iran.

Regarding how to deal with Iran, Israel has to look at America's eye color. Without its (secret or open) support, Israel dare not to perform the bombing plan itself.

Actually, to Iran's nuclear project, not only Israel but also the U.S. want to destroy it. However, it is not easy to make the determination when to do it. Too many factors need consideration and too many consequences need assessment.

For instance, the leader of Iran's Revolutionary Guards Mohammad Ali Jafar once told Iran's Arabic language al-Alam television: "If the Zionist regime attacks Iran, we will surely strike its nuclear facilities with our missile capabilities."

Even if Israel is confident to deal with this threat, they still have more challenges to face.

I'll discuss the topic more later.

Focus U.S.A. / Will Israel really attack Iran within a year?

After interviewing dozens of Israeli, American and Arab officials, Atlantic Magazine correspondent concludes Israel may not even ask for American 'green light' to attack Iran nuclear sites.
